Yes, that's the big reason for the Vimmerby visit.
Astrid Lindgren's World, this fantastic park of experiences for young and old. Sweden's largest open-air theatre with 100 actors working in different environments to bring Astrid Lindgren's fantastic stories to life.
How Astrid Lindgren's World was founded
The park was founded by three middle-aged families of friends in the 1980s. It was called Sagobyn. One of the founders was a naprapath, Rein Soowik and treated back pain. He had Astrid himself as a patient and told him that he would like to do something in Vimmerby to honour the daughter of the village. Astrid herself was modest and said that she did not want a statue. When Rein then said that he wanted to build Katthult in miniature so that the children could go into the cottage and play in it, Astrid gave her blessing.
That's the way it is. There were more and more environments in "Fairytale Village" as it was initially called before new owners of the park named it Astrid Lindgren's World and it continued to grow. Between 2000 and 2010, Astrid Lindgren's family, especially her grandchildren, took an interest in the operation of the park and they took over from the municipality that owned it at the time, in return for a promise to develop it further.
Every year, the family spends millions on renovating, expanding and improving and today it is one of the country's finest and most visited tourist destinations with over 500,000 visits annually.
